Biography
Jian-Ming Jin joined the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 1993, after serving as a Senior Scientist at Otsuka Electronics (USA), Inc., Fort Collins, CO. Currently, he is a Full Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Associate Director of the Center for Computational Electromagnetics at UIUC. He is also an affiliate member of the Magnetic Resonance Engineering Laboratory in the Beckman Institute of UIUC. He serves as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, Radio Science, Electromagnetics Journal, Microwave and Optical Technology Letters. His name is listed in the university's List of Excellent Instructors. He has published over 150 articles in refereed journals and several book chapters, authored the first comprehensive textbook on the finite element method for electromagnetic analysis, The Finite Element Method in Electromagnetics (New York: Wiley, 1993; 2002), a book on modern magnetic resonance imaging systems, Electromagnetic Analysis and Design in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Boca Raton, FL: CRC, 1998), co-authored a book on applied mathematics, Computation of Special Functions (New York: Wiley, 1996), and co-edited Fast and Efficient Algorithms in Computational Electromagnetics (Boston: Artech, 2001). His current research interests include computational electromagnetics, magnetic resonance imaging, gradient and RF coil design, bioelectromagnetics, scattering and antenna analysis, and electromagnetic compatibility.
Dr. Jin is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the U.S. National Committee of the International Radio Science Union, Tau Beta Pi, Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society, and International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine. He served as the Symposium Co-Chairman and Technical Program Chairman of the 1997 and 1998 International Symposium on Applied Computational Electromagnetics, respectively. He is a recipient of a 1994 National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award and 1995 Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award. He also received the 1997 and 2000 Xerox Research Awards from UIUC College of Engineering. In 1998, he is appointed as the Henry Magnuski Scholar in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Dr. Jin received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in applied physics from Nanjing University, Nanjing, China, in 1982 and 1984, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1989.
